About the Book

Rich with early 20th Century photos, Black Rocks and Cold Wind details the challenges of growing up during—and surviving—the Great Depression in a fledgling Southern Utah town. Vividly portraying her ancestors, chronicling the tasks of building a canal and irrigation, Ms. Newhart easily depicts the fun-and-games, pranks and daily life of family and townspeople, alongside the more serious business of striving to make life work. An easy read.

About the Author

Alaina Newhart is a third generation Utah pioneer. As a very shy person she did not participate much, but observed the lives that surrounded her as a town was being formed with little chance of survival.

At 86 she felt compelled to publish her story. Still overcoming the challenges of a rugged childhood, she is definitely a survivor. Alaina makes her home in Northern Arizona.
