About the Book

In the Uncommon English Teacher and The Forgotten Doughboy, Kathy Bussmann tells the wrenching story of a woman and man who broke the stereotypes of their era. At a time when ladies stayed home and raised their children, Marian Viets Rainey wanted a career in order to use her exceptions education. In a day when men were men, shell-shocked Howard Rainey struggled with the world of work. Their story is a quiet, yet profound tale of love, marriage and work set against the tumult of World War I and the Great Depression. The author is their granddaughter who serendipitously discovered their diaries and letters long after they died. Bussmann spent twenty years researching their lives and times. In the process she gained new understanding of the meaning of family. By Carol Ferring Shepley

About the Author

As a family-oriented, working mother of two, Kathy Rainey Bussmann believes powerful bonds make families successful. Bussmann was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri where she attended John Burroughs School. She majored in Food and Nutrition at Iowa State University, and received her Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Missouri, which provided her with the strong academic background necessary to tackle the transcription, narration, and research for her book, The Uncommon English Teacher and the Forgotten Doughboy. The discovery of her paternal grandparent’s diaries and letters from over 100 years ago painted authentic pictures of their unique personalities and helped Kathy to intimately experience what their lives were like during this time period, including women’s right to vote, World War I, and the Great Depression. Kathy’s research into her families’ genealogy took a surprising turn when she found out that her genetics, specifically a stem cell transplant from her younger sister, would save her own life. Throughout the book, her family members’ strong spirits of hope and faith during their own difficult times posthumously guided Kathy through her personal battle. It is the author’s wish that this book will bring peace, knowledge, joy, and hope to all readers.
